The basic strategy
Day 1→ Desert + overnight camp
Day 2 → Kuldhara/Khaba + Bada Bagh + city heritage
Day 3 → War Museum + Jaisalmer Fort
This avoids unnecessary backtracking.
DAY 1
Desert Sunset + Camel/Jeep Safari + Cultural Night12:00 PM — Check out/leave for the desert
If you’re arriving in Jaisalmer in the morning, have lunch in the city and leave around 12:00–12:30 PM.
If you already have your luggage with you, don’t worry about sightseeing with the suitcases: go directly to your desert camp and leave the luggage there.
Sam Sand Dunes is roughly 40–45 km from central Jaisalmer.
2:00 PM — Check-in at desert camp
Have lunch/tea and relax for a little while.
Don’t schedule sightseeing in the middle of the afternoon. Winter weather is pleasant, but you’ll enjoy the desert much more if you aren’t rushing.
4:00 PM — Camel ride / Jeep safari
This is the time I’d recommend for the desert safari.
If your budget allows:
Camel ride → Jeep safari → sunset
The combination gives you two very different experiences.
5:30–6:40 PM — Sunset at the dunes
Do NOT leave the dunes immediately after the camel ride.
Stay for sunset.
Winter sunset is around 6:35–6:40 PM, so this is your main photography moment.
7:30 PM onwards — Rajasthani Cultural Evening
Back at the camp:
- Folk music
- Kalbelia/folk dance
- Bonfire
- Rajasthani dinner
- Cultural performances
Then spend the night at the desert camp.
DAY 2 — 6 FEBRUARY
Kuldhara → Khaba → Bada Bagh → City
This is where I’d make the biggest change to your original plan.
Instead of going:
Kuldhara → Khaba → Bada Bagh → Desert National Park → Gadisar → Havelis
I’d remove Desert National Park from Day 2.
Why?
The park’s published hours are approximately 10 AM–5 PM, and fitting a proper visit into your Kuldhara/Khaba/Bada Bagh route would make the day unnecessarily rushed.
The park is worthwhile, particularly for wildlife and birdlife, but with only three days I’d prioritise the actual Jaisalmer experience.
7:00 AM — Desert sunrise
Wake up early.
February sunrise is around 7:20–7:25 AM, so leave the tent around 7:00 AM.
Watch the sunrise from the dunes.
8:00 AM — Breakfast at camp
Return to the camp, have breakfast and get ready.
9:00 AM — Check out
Here’s the important part:
Put all your luggage in your vehicle.
Don’t take it sightseeing.
Your driver will keep it safely in the car while you explore.
Then start your sightseeing loop.
10:00 AM — Kuldhara Village
Drive towards Kuldhara.
Give yourself approximately 45–60 minutes here.
Walk around the abandoned village, see the old houses and enjoy the atmosphere.
Kuldhara is one of Jaisalmer’s most intriguing historic sites and is officially highlighted by Rajasthan Tourism as an important destination around Jaisalmer.
11:15 AM — Khaba Fort
Continue to Khaba Fort.
Spend around 45 minutes.
This is primarily a photography/viewpoint stop, so you don’t need several hours here.
12:15–1:00 PM — Lunch
Have lunch either en route or back towards Jaisalmer.
Don’t have a heavy lunch if you’re planning lots of walking in the afternoon.
1:30 PM — Bada Bagh
Head to Bada Bagh.
Allow around 45–60 minutes.
Bada Bagh is about 6 km north of Jaisalmer and is particularly beautiful in low light.
I would not save Bada Bagh for sunset on this itinerary because you’re going to need the evening for the city.
3:00 PM — Hotel check-in
Now go to your Jaisalmer city hotel.
Check in + freshen up
Give yourself 45–60 minutes.
This is important.
After two days of desert sightseeing, you don’t want to spend the entire evening exhausted.
4:15 PM — Patwon Ki Haveli
Head into the old city.
Start with Patwon Ki Haveli.
The current business listing shows approximately 9:00 AM–6:30 PM, so reaching around 4:15 gives you plenty of time. Kothari’s Patwon Ki Haveli / Patwa Haveli
Allow:
4:15–5:15 PM
5:20 PM — Gadisar Lake
Then head to Gadisar Lake.
This is only a short drive from the central heritage area.
Gadisar Lake
4.3•Lake
5:20–6:15 PM
Walk around the lake, see the ghats and enjoy the evening light.
This gives you a relaxed evening rather than another rushed monument.
7:00 PM — Dinner
Have dinner in the old city/near your hotel.
My suggestion:
Don’t plan another major attraction after dinner.
You’ve already had:
Desert sunrise → Kuldhara → Khaba → Bada Bagh → hotel → Patwon → Gadisar
That’s plenty.
DAY 3 — 7 FEBRUARY
War Museum + Golden Fort + Jain Temples + Nathmal Ki Haveli
This day is deliberately slower.
7:30 AM — Breakfast
Have a proper breakfast at the hotel.
🇮🇳 8:30 AM — Leave for Jaisalmer War Museum
I’d go relatively early.
Jaisalmer War Museum
4.7•Museum•Closed
The current listing shows roughly 9 AM–7 PM, so there’s no need to arrive extremely early.
9:00–10:30 AM
Spend around 1–1.5 hours here.
11:00 AM — Return to Jaisalmer
Head back towards the city.
11:30 AM — Jaisalmer Fort
This is the main event of Day 3.
Jaisalmer Fort

Don’t just walk around the outside.
Go inside and explore the living fort.
Rajasthan Tourism specifically notes that Jaisalmer Fort remains a living settlement, with shops, hotels and homes inside its walls.
11:45 AM–1:00 PM — Jain Temples
This is the one place where timing matters.
The Jain temples are inside Jaisalmer Fort, and current published tourist timings are approximately 8 AM–12 PM.
So:
Do the Jain Temples FIRST.
Don’t leave them until afternoon.
The seven temples are particularly beautiful for their detailed sandstone carving.
1:15 PM — Lunch inside/near the Fort
This is a good opportunity to have lunch at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the golden city.
Take your time.
You’re not rushing anywhere now.
2:30–4:00 PM — Explore Jaisalmer Fort
Now simply wander.
Explore:
- Fort lanes
- Local shops
- Havelis
- Viewpoints
- Handicrafts
- Architecture
- Small cafés
This is the part of the trip where I would not follow Google Maps attraction by attraction.
Just walk.
4:15 PM — Nathmal Ki Haveli
Now head out of the fort and visit Nathmal Ki Haveli.
Nathmal Ki Haveli
4.2•Historical place•Open
Your original plan had this on Day 2, but I think it fits much better here.
5:00 PM — Tea + Shopping
Keep 5:00–6:00 PM free.
Explore the markets around:
- Sadar Bazaar
- Manak Chowk
- Fort area
Pick up:
- Rajasthani textiles
- Bandhani
- Handicrafts
- Leather/jutti items
- Local souvenirs
6:00 PM — Golden Hour Around the Fort
This is your final Jaisalmer moment.
Find a rooftop/viewpoint where you can see the fort glowing in the evening light.
Rajasthan Tourism specifically describes the way the setting sun gives Jaisalmer Fort its golden, mystical appearance.
7:30 PM — Final Dinner
Have a relaxed final Rajasthani dinner.
Then return to your hotel.
YOUR FINAL ROUTE
DAY 1
Jaisalmer → Sam Sand Dunes → Camel/Jeep Safari → Sunset → Cultural Night → Camp
DAY 2
Camp → Sunrise → Kuldhara → Khaba Fort → Bada Bagh → City Hotel → Patwon Ki Haveli → Gadisar Lake → Dinner
DAY 3
Hotel → War Museum → Jaisalmer Fort → Jain Temples → Lunch → Fort exploration → Nathmal Ki Haveli → Shopping → Golden-hour Fort view → Dinner
What I would REMOVE
Desert National Park
Not because it’s bad — it’s actually very interesting, especially if you’re interested in birds and desert wildlife. Rajasthan Tourism highlights the Great Indian Bustard and several other desert species there.
But for only three days, I wouldn’t sacrifice the relaxed Jaisalmer city experience for it.
If wildlife is particularly important to you, we can put it back in.
One More Important Change
I would not put Gadisar Lake and both havelis after a full day of desert excursions.
Your original Day 2 would essentially be:
Desert sunrise → rides → Kuldhara → Khaba → Bada Bagh → DNP → Gadisar → Nathmal → Patwon
That’s a checklist, not a holiday. 😄
The revised plan gives you breathing room and groups the attractions much more logically.
